Women with the condition often present with several symptoms in puberty but these may also begin in their early to mid 20s. Symptoms of PCOS include polycystic ovaries (tiny cysts on the ovaries), hirsuitism (excessive hair growth), hair loss, acne, oily skin, obesity, infertility or reduced fertility, skin tags (excess flaps of skin in the armpits or neck area), anxiety, depression, patchy dark skin (on the neck, arms, breasts, or thigh) and irregular or absent menstrual periods. In addition, women with PCOS often have an increased risk of developing serious health problems including insulin resistance, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Unfortunately the cause of PCOS is unknown, however women suffering are more likely to have a mother or sister with the condition, suggesting there is a genetic link. A non-feeding frenzy

IF lets you eat anything you want, just not when you want to eat it. And despite that heart-stopping word - “fasting” - you don’t ever have to go completely without food. OK, let’s review… US Harper’s Bazaar reports that the non-feeding frenzy has been fuelled in part by The Fast Diet, a best-selling book from England, positing the concept that you can eat normally on five days out of the week, but on two non-consecutive days you’re limited to two small meals of 500 calories, total. Co-authors Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer, both journalists, insist that this 5:2 eating pattern not only helps you lose weight, it improves a range of metabolic and even cognitive function, and may even help delay aging. Their claims seem to be backed up by a growing body of scientific research, too. Studies have shown success with alternate-day dietary restriction, and even with overnight fasting, where you limit your food intake to an eight-hour “window” each day, say from 11am through to 7pm … which basically means, don’t eat after dinner and have your brekkie late. Some scientists believe that by alternating our eating patterns, we more closely mimic the feast-or-famine cycles that our prehistoric ancestors knew. And let’s face it … our ancestors did look pretty fabulous in a loin cloth.

She married North Melbourne coach Brad Scott in December. In the past she’s dyed her eyebrows orange, her hair, too, (we’ve all done it, you remember Sun-In). “I’ve had self-waxing burns, I used to do it all myself, and now I’d much prefer to leave it in the hands of Liane [at neoSKiN Richmond].” It was to Liane’s hands that Penny entrusted herself in the lead up to her wedding: “I set it up with the Winter Rejuvenation Package.
