Millie, 16

Like most 16 year-olds Millie had somewhere to be, the netball court was calling, but we did want to know what was working for her skin … after all, teenage years can be tough.

“I started at neoSKiN a long time ago, but my sister and I have quite oily skin and when I was her age (13) it was pretty bad, so I came in often and now it’s all clear. I get facials [neoClear], I get my eyebrows waxed and if I’ve got something on I get a spray tan as well.”

What advice would you give to other girls – people - your age, who might be struggling with their skin? “Don’t touch it, it’s hard not to do, but it’s bad. And when you wear make-up you always have to take it off. My skin has been good for a long time now, but I still have to take care of it.”

Have there been any missteps along the way? “One time I had my eyebrows waxed – somewhere else, it was at some salon somewhere – and I was allergic to the wax and my whole face blew up. I couldn’t even open my eyes. It was terrible.”

What’s next? “I’m going to get laser hair removal done, you have to be 16 to do it, so I’m going to get that done soon.” We couldn’t help but be envious of Millie; she’ll never – ever - have to toil with the razor, with wax, none of it. “I know, I know,” she smiled.

</regular-body></post><post id="52757257455" url="http://neoskin.tumblr.com/post/52757257455" url-with-slug="http://neoskin.tumblr.com/post/52757257455/botox-the-hush-hush-beauty-treatment-we-love-to-hate" type="regular" date-gmt="2013-06-12 02:08:00 GMT" date="Tue, 11 Jun 2013 22:08:00" unix-timestamp="1371002880" format="html" reblog-key="9Sc2dUO4" slug="botox-the-hush-hush-beauty-treatment-we-love-to-hate"><regular-title>Botox: The hush hush beauty treatment we love to hate</regular-title><regular-body>

We all have insecurities about something at one point or other in our lives: our thighs, our single status, our bank accounts or the crows’ feet around our eyes. Not surprisingly, cosmetic enhancement and medical skin treatments, more specifically, anti-ageing skin treatments have become a reoccurring diary appointment or bi-monthly calendar fixture for many of us.

Why then, are these extremely popular services such a taboo in our communities, workplace or culture? Why do we feign disinterest or judge anyone who dabbles in a little booster or filler here and there?

No matter your age or stage in life, it is increasingly difficult to ignore Botox. Over the last ten years the cosmetic surgery industry has thrived and the demand for treatments has hit an all time high, with scheduled Botox appointments becoming almost as routine as a trip to the hairdressers.

The Courier Mail in Queensland recently reported that a staggering 1.5 million injections of botox were given to image-conscious Australians last year. Botox was also officially reported as the most requested skin enhancing treatment in over 91% of clinics in Australia in 2012.

In Sydney, recent statistics have shown that one in ten cosmetic procedures are performed on men, proving that in today’s society it isn’t only women heading to their nearest clinic for a secret anti-ageing ‘hit’ on their lunch break. Men are just as concerned with ageing and keeping up appearances, with the most requested procedures including botox, liposuction and hair transplants.

The decision to have surgical or soft cosmetic treatment is a highly personal one and not something that everyone will understand. The latest science, techniques and technology allow us to turn back the clock and change our appearance - if we desire. Ageing gracefully is a lovely concept for the genetically blessed or self-assured. Those who choose professional cosmetic enhancement, for whatever reason, are simply pursuing the opportunity to feel and look their best - and why shouldn’t they?

At neoSKiN, we’re keen supporters of the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome of Australia Inc. (POSAA), a registered charity that supports women who have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). We see the effect PCOS has on women’s lives and want to promote awareness and encourage research to help find a cure for this encumbering syndrome.

What is PCOS?

PCOS is a serious health condition resulting from a hormonal imbalance and insulin resistance. In women with PCOS the ovaries produce more androgens than normal, which affects the development and release of eggs during ovulation.

It’s estimated that half a million women are affected by the condition, but most are either unaware they have the syndrome or suffer in silence, too embarrassed to speak out and seek medical advice.

Women with the condition often present with several symptoms in puberty but these may also begin in their early to mid 20s.

Symptoms of PCOS include polycystic ovaries (tiny cysts on the ovaries), hirsuitism (excessive hair growth), hair loss, acne, oily skin, obesity, infertility or reduced fertility, skin tags (excess flaps of skin in the armpits or neck area), anxiety, depression, patchy dark skin (on the neck, arms, breasts, or thigh) and irregular or absent menstrual periods.

In addition, women with PCOS often have an increased risk of developing serious health problems including insulin resistance, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Please note: If you’re suffering from two or more of the above symptoms, the POSAA recommends making an appointment with your doctor for a consultation.

What causes PCOS and how is it treated?

Unfortunately the cause of PCOS is unknown, however women suffering are more likely to have a mother or sister with the condition, suggesting there is a genetic link. At this stage there is no cure for PCOS – although symptoms can be managed effectively, which dramatically improves the lifestyle of those affected.

If you think you could be suffering from PCOS or would like to know more about this condition, we recommend contacting your doctor for further information.

Want to know more?

Regarded as a leader in women’s healthcare, the Jean Hailes Foundation was established as a not-for-profit organisation in 1992 to honour the memory of Dr Jean Hailes – A pioneer in women’s health. The foundation provides important programs, resources and services to improve Australian women’s health and wellbeing, with a singular determination to make a difference.

The most buzzed-about diet of the moment is something called intermittent fasting (IF). IF lets you eat anything you want, just not when you want to eat it. And despite that heart-stopping word - “fasting” - you don’t ever have to go completely without food. OK, let’s review…

US Harper’s Bazaar reports that the non-feeding frenzy has been fuelled in part by The Fast Diet, a best-selling book from England, positing the concept that you can eat normally on five days out of the week, but on two non-consecutive days you’re limited to two small meals of 500 calories, total. Co-authors Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer, both journalists, insist that this 5:2 eating pattern not only helps you lose weight, it improves a range of metabolic and even cognitive function, and may even help delay aging. Their claims seem to be backed up by a growing body of scientific research, too.

Studies have shown success with alternate-day dietary restriction, and even with overnight fasting, where you limit your food intake to an eight-hour “window” each day, say from 11am through to 7pm … which basically means, don’t eat after dinner and have your brekkie late. Some scientists believe that by alternating our eating patterns, we more closely mimic the feast-or-famine cycles that our prehistoric ancestors knew. And let’s face it … our ancestors did look pretty fabulous in a loin cloth.

</regular-body></post><post id="50952093719" url="http://neoskin.tumblr.com/post/50952093719" url-with-slug="http://neoskin.tumblr.com/post/50952093719/neoskin-profile-penny-scott" type="regular" date-gmt="2013-05-21 01:09:45 GMT" date="Mon, 20 May 2013 21:09:45" unix-timestamp="1369098585" format="html" reblog-key="x3NmKPQq" slug="neoskin-profile-penny-scott"><regular-title>neoSKiN profile: Penny Scott</regular-title><regular-body>

Penny, 34, landscape designer

It’s not on her licence yet - “Not yet, it’s on a few things, I’m slowly getting there” - but when it’s on everything her name will be Penny Scott. She married North Melbourne coach Brad Scott in December.

In the past she’s dyed her eyebrows orange, her hair, too, (we’ve all done it, you remember Sun-In). “I’ve had self-waxing burns, I used to do it all myself, and now I’d much prefer to leave it in the hands of Liane [at neoSKiN Richmond].”

It was to Liane’s hands that Penny entrusted herself in the lead up to her wedding: “I set it up with the Winter Rejuvenation Package. So I had two peels, two microdermabrasions and IPL - on my face and my décolletage and on my back - so I spaced those out in the lead up and then I’d have a facial at the end of each microdermabrasion or peel. I was doing a lot of exercise, doing a Boot Camp, and drinking a lot of water. I got engaged at the end of June so I only had five months.”

Must-have neoSKiN treatment: “The neoBooster facial. Any time I have a big event, before the engagement party, before the wedding, I have the neoBooster facial, it just gives your skin a glow. I got my sister onto it, my mum, my best friend’s mum, my best friend. I think it’s the best facial in Melbourne.”

Whose style do you most admire? “My grandma [June], she’s 87. My sister and I call her ‘Jackie O’ or ‘Grace Kelly’; she’s always got beautifully tailored suits with matching shoes and handbags and hats. She always looks amazing and carries herself with real elegance.”

But fear not, neoSKiN is here to help debunk three of the most common skin myths once and for all.

                        Source: http://fora.mtv.ca/tag/skin-care/

Myth: Acne is caused by dirt

Truth: Surface dirt is not the cause of this skin concern, neither is surface oil. Acne develops due to sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria clogging pores. While the dark colour of blackheads might look like dirt, these black spots are in fact dead cells at the top of clogged pores.

Myth:If my makeup has SPF in it, I can skip my sunscreen routine

Truth: While this might sound like a logical argument, this is one skin myth that needs to be set straight. While makeup may contain SPF you would need to apply it approximately fifteen times more than normal in order to reap the protective benefits. Regardless of the SPF content found in makeup you should always apply sunscreen first. End of discussion.

Myth: You should never cover up blemishes

Truth: Many believe that covering up blemishes with makeup will clog up pores and cause skin to flare up but this is not always the case. Aggravation can occur if you have sensitive skin and use makeup designed for those with normal skin, however there is no harm in covering up a blemish or two with products suited to your skin type!

Are you in desperate need of removing unwanted tattoos from your skin? If so, neoSKiN have news that will put a smile on your face!

neoSKiN Richmond is now offering a fast, effective and gentle way to remove unwanted tattoos - with no downtime from your busy lives.

The once irremovable ink can now be zapped away thanks to neoSKiN’s new NaturaLase QS machine – recognised worldwide as the best machine on the market, delivering the best results every time.

Learn more about the treatment below and get ready to zap the past away!

What is NaturaLase QS?

The NaturaLase QS is the highest energy q-switched system in the world, delivering a highly focused medical laser to successfully remove tattoos. This well designed, reliable and versatile laser can also treat skin rejuvenation, pigmented lesions, vascular lesions and hair removal.

How does the laser work?

Using a large spot and flat top beam, the Q-Switched Nd:YAGdelivers energy deep into the skin with minimal damage to the skin’s surface.

With a bigger spot and increased energy this machine allows for superior penetration into the skin. By striking tattoo ink and shattering it into fine particles, these can then be absorbed and removed by the bodies cell cleaning (lymphatic) system.

The industry leading power and beam quality available only from the NaturaLase QS allows for a new ‘Gold Standard’ in tattoo removal treatments.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on the surface area of the tattoo, however, for the best results, we recommend 10 to 15 treatments.

How long do I need to wait between treatments?

A minimum of six weeks is recommended. This allows enough time for the lymphatic system to remove any ink particles from the body.

How long after being tattooed can I have it removed?

We recommend letting the tattoo heal before commencing removal treatments - A minimum of six weeks is recommended.

How long is recovery?

The best thing about this treatment is that there is no downtime required. This treatment leaves no open wounds to the skin and is very gentle, so you can carry on with your busy life!

Who will deliver my treatment?
